Google Business Profile for Shops in India: Get Found on Google Maps and in "Near Me" Searches
By Motu Patlu Ads · Published · 6 min read
When someone nearby types "mobile shop near me", "medical store open now" or "best bakery in [area]", Google shows a map with a few shops. If your shop is on that map with correct details and good photos, people can call you or get directions in seconds.
The listing is free and made for local businesses. This guide explains how to set it up, what to fill in, how to handle reviews, and what to update every week. We make no promises about rankings, because nobody outside Google controls them, but a complete and honest profile gives you the best chance.
What is a Google Business Profile and why does a shop need it?
A Google Business Profile (earlier known as Google My Business) is the listing that shows your shop on Google Maps and Google Search. It can display your name, category, address, phone number, opening hours, website, photos, videos, reviews and more.
For a local shop, this is often the first impression. Many customers check the listing before visiting, especially for places they have not been to. If the listing is missing or wrong, you can lose a customer who simply went to the next shop on the map.
How do I claim and verify my shop on Google?
- Search for your shop name on Google Maps. If a listing already exists, you may be able to claim it. If not, add your business.
- Sign in with a Google account that you will keep long term, ideally an email you control and not one belonging to an employee who may leave.
- Enter the exact shop name, category and address. Place the map pin on the right spot of your shop.
- Add your phone number and, if you serve customers at your shop, show your address. Home-based services can choose to show a service area instead; follow the on-screen options.
- Complete verification. Google offers different ways depending on the shop, such as a code or a video or phone check. Follow what the screen shows.
- Wait for approval, and then complete the rest of the profile.
Tip: Do not create a second listing for the same shop; duplicates confuse customers and Google.
What details must I fill in?
Complete profiles help Google understand your shop and help customers trust it. Fill as much as is true and relevant.
- Name: your real shop name as on your board. Do not add extra keywords or locations just to rank.
- Category: choose the main category that best describes you, then add secondary categories if they truly apply.
- Address and map pin: check the pin on the map from your phone.
- Phone number: one number that someone answers during working hours.
- Hours: set regular hours, and special hours for festivals and holidays.
- Website or WhatsApp/social link: if available.
- Description: two or three honest lines about what you sell and your area.
- Products or services: add your main items with photos and short descriptions if the profile offers that section.
- Attributes: for example home delivery, pickup, digital payments, wheelchair access, as offered.
Which photos and videos should I upload?
Photos make a listing feel alive. Upload real pictures taken on your phone, in good light, with the lens cleaned. Avoid stock images or photos of other shops.
- Outside view of the shop with the name board, taken from the street so people can recognise it.
- Entrance and parking or landmark, so visitors can find you.
- Inside view: shelves, counter, seating, trial room or work area.
- Best products, close up and clearly lit.
- Staff or owner at work (with permission).
- A short vertical video: a 15 to 20 second tour of the shop. A tool such as Motu Patlu Ads can also create a short shop promo video that you can review and use as a starting point.
Tip: Add new photos regularly, for example after a new stock arrival or festival decoration, so the listing never looks abandoned.
How do I get more reviews from happy customers?
Reviews are the stars and comments people leave about your shop. Customers read them carefully before deciding. Ask for reviews politely and make it easy: your Business Profile gives you a link that you can share by WhatsApp or turn into a QR code to print on the counter.
Never write fake reviews, never pay for reviews and never offer gifts or discounts in return for good ones. Platforms have rules against misleading reviews and customers can often tell.
- At billing: "Aapko service pasand aayi to Google par ek review dijiye, hamare liye bahut madad hogi."
- WhatsApp after purchase: "Namaste [Name]! [Shop] se kharidne ke liye shukriya. Agar aap review dena chahein, to ye link: [link]."
- Print a small card or QR near the counter.
- Train staff to ask politely, without pressure.
How should I reply to reviews, including bad ones?
Reply to every review within a day or two. Replies show that a real owner is present.
- Good review: "Shukriya [Name]! Aapko [product/service] pasand aayi, ye jaankar khushi hui. Phir aaiye."
- Average review: thank them, mention what you will improve.
- Negative review: stay calm and polite. "Maafi chahte hain ki aapka experience accha nahi raha. Kripya [number] par call karein, hum theek karenge."
- Do not argue, share private details or blame the customer in public.
- If a review is clearly fake or abusive, use the report option in the profile.
How can I show up in "near me" searches?
Google explains that local results depend on things like relevance (how well your listing matches the search), distance (how far you are from the person) and prominence (how well known you are). You cannot change distance, but you can improve the other two.
Keep the listing complete and accurate, choose the right categories, add photos, collect genuine reviews, keep hours updated and make sure your name, address and phone number are the same on your Facebook Page, website and bills. Nobody can guarantee a position, so treat this as steady housekeeping.
What should I update every week and every festival?
- Special opening hours for holidays and festivals, before the day arrives.
- New photos of fresh stock, festival decor or offers.
- Posts or updates, if the profile offers them, with offers and events.
- Replies to new reviews and questions.
- Temporary changes such as shifting location, closed for renovation or new delivery area.
Tip: Set a reminder every Sunday: 10 minutes to add one photo, check hours and reply to reviews.
Google Business Profile checklist
Your listing works best together with your other channels. Use the same video on your listing, WhatsApp Status and Facebook, and when you need a fresh one you can create it from your shop photo.
- Shop claimed and verified with a Google account you control.
- Name, address, map pin, phone and hours correct.
- Main category plus relevant secondary categories chosen.
- At least 8 to 10 real photos and one short video uploaded.
- Products or services added, with descriptions.
- Review link saved on your phone and QR printed at the counter.
- All reviews replied to politely.
- Festival hours updated in advance.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Business Profile free for shops?
Creating and managing a Google Business Profile is free for local businesses. Be careful of anyone who asks for money to put your shop on Google Maps. Always use your own Google account and the official process.
Do I need a website to use Google Business Profile?
No. You can have a useful profile with just your address, phone number, hours, photos and reviews. If you have a website, WhatsApp link or social page, you can add it, but it is not compulsory.
How long does Google verification take?
It depends on the method Google offers for your shop and can vary. Follow the instructions on the screen, keep your details accurate, and check the app for the latest status. Do not create duplicate listings while waiting.
Can I change my shop name or address on Google later?
Yes, you can edit details from your profile, and Google may review some changes. Always use your real shop name and current address. If you shift your shop, update the listing, photos and hours as soon as possible.
Can I remove a bad review?
You cannot delete reviews yourself, but you can reply politely and report reviews that break the rules, such as spam or abusive content. A calm, helpful reply often matters more to future customers than the review itself.
