How to Promote a New Shop: A 30-Day Grand Opening Plan for Indian Shopkeepers
By Motu Patlu Ads · Published · 7 min read
A new shop has one big problem: nobody knows it exists. Even if your products and prices are good, people walk past a board they have never seen. The first month is about making your name familiar to the people within a few kilometres.
This is a practical 30-day plan, built for a single-owner shop with a small budget. You do not need to do everything. Pick the steps that fit your trade, and do them in order.
What should I decide before I start promoting?
Answer five questions on paper. They keep every later ad simple and consistent.
- Who is my customer? Families nearby, students, office workers, shop owners, brides? Be specific.
- What is my one main reason to visit? Fresh stock, lowest price, widest choice, home delivery, trusted service, or open late.
- What is my opening offer? Something you can afford, such as a free gift on the first purchase, a discount on a few items, or a lucky coupon.
- What is my catchment area? List the colonies, societies, schools or markets within a short travel distance.
- What is my one contact number? Use the same number everywhere: signboard, WhatsApp, Google and videos.
Days 1 to 7: how do I build the basics?
The first week is setup. Nothing here costs much, but it makes the later weeks work.
- Create a Google Business Profile with your shop name, category, address, timings, phone and a few clear photos. Read our guide to Google Business Profile for shops.
- Install WhatsApp Business on your shop number. Add your business name, address, hours, a short description and your top products to the catalogue. Our WhatsApp Business app guide shows how.
- Take 15 to 20 good photos of the shop, shelves, entrance and top products in daylight.
- Fix your signboard, so the name and what you sell are readable from the road.
- Order or print a few simple handouts or a QR code that opens your WhatsApp chat.
Days 8 to 14: how do I create buzz before opening?
Start telling people the shop is coming. A little curiosity in advance means a better first day.
- Put a "Coming soon: [shop name], opening [date]" board or banner outside, once you are sure of the date.
- Post a short teaser on WhatsApp Status and Instagram: the shop being set up, the board being fixed, the shelves being filled.
- Message friends, relatives, neighbours and old colleagues personally and ask them to forward the invitation to their families.
- Visit nearby societies, offices and markets, and speak to the people who manage them. A friendly personal visit is hard to beat.
- Prepare your 20-second grand opening video. A sample outline is in the next section.
Tip: Personal invitations carry more weight than any ad. Make a list of 100 people and message each one individually.
What should my grand opening video show?
Keep it short, warm and clear. Here is a 20-second outline you can follow with your phone, as explained in our guide on how to make a shop video ad on mobile.
- Seconds 0 to 3: the shutter or door opening, with the caption "Hamari nayi dukaan khul gayi!"
- Seconds 3 to 8: a slow pan over shelves and products, with "[Product 1], [Product 2], [Product 3] aur bahut kuch."
- Seconds 8 to 13: you at the counter: "Namaste, main [naam]. [Area] mein aapka swagat hai."
- Seconds 13 to 17: the opening offer in big text, such as "Opening week: [offer]".
- Seconds 17 to 20: address, landmark, timings and "WhatsApp: [phone number]".
Days 15 to 21: what happens in opening week?
Opening week is when you convert all that preparation into footfall. Keep the offer simple and time-limited, so people act quickly.
- Post the grand opening video on WhatsApp Status, Instagram, Facebook and your Google profile, and send it to your personal contact list.
- Run the opening offer for 7 days only. A clear end date creates a reason to come now.
- Greet every visitor, offer tea or a small sweet if it suits your shop, and ask how they found you.
- Keep a small notebook at the counter. Write each visitor name, phone number (with permission) and how they heard about you.
- Put the same opening offer on the signboard, so passers-by see it even if they never open a phone.
- Take photos of the opening day crowd and post them the same evening.
Days 22 to 30: how do I keep customers coming back?
Many new shops get a good first week and then go quiet. The last nine days are for turning first-time visitors into regulars.
- Ask for Google reviews. After a happy purchase, say, "Agar achha laga, Google par ek review likh dijiye." Show them how or share your link on WhatsApp. Never pay for or fake reviews.
- Say thank you. Send a short WhatsApp message to the people who gave you their number, such as "Thank you for visiting [shop name]. Aapka feedback humein batayein."
- Start a referral gift. For example, "Bring a friend, both get a small gift." Keep it easy to understand and affordable.
- Post one useful update twice a week. New stock, a customer smile, a how-to tip, a short product demonstration.
- Create a broadcast list for people who save your number, and send them one useful message a week, not a flood.
What can I do with a small budget?
Most of this plan is free or low cost: Google Business Profile, WhatsApp, your own phone videos, personal messages and word of mouth. If you have a little money to spend, put it where people will see it: a clear signboard, good photos, a handful of printed handouts, and a small opening gift.
If you do not have time to shoot and edit, you can also use an AI tool. For example, Motu Patlu Ads has a Grand Opening style in which you add your shop photo, details and opening offer, and it generates a video you can preview and share. Whichever method you choose, the plan above stays the same.
What mistakes should a new shop avoid?
- Spending everything on opening day and nothing on the weeks after it.
- Offering a discount so deep that you lose money on every sale.
- Using different phone numbers or shop names on the board, on WhatsApp and on Google.
- Not stocking the items shown in the ad. A customer who comes for an advertised product and does not find it rarely returns.
- Ignoring complaints or reviews. Reply politely and fix the problem.
Tip: Before opening day, check that every item you advertised is on the shelf and that the price matches the ad.
Frequently asked questions
When should I start promoting a new shop?
Ideally about two weeks before opening. Use that time to set up Google and WhatsApp, put up a coming-soon board and invite people personally. Then run the opening offer for about a week and continue steady updates for the first month.
What is a good grand opening offer?
Choose something you can afford and explain in one line, such as a free gift on first purchase, a discount on a few popular items, or a lucky coupon. Keep it limited to opening week so people act quickly, and always honour it.
Is a video ad necessary for a new shop?
It is not necessary, but a short video can show your shop and products quickly to people who have never visited. It also gives you something easy to share on WhatsApp Status, Instagram and Facebook, which can help new customers recognise you.
How do I get my first Google reviews?
Ask happy customers politely at the counter and share your review link on WhatsApp. Do not pay for reviews or ask friends to write fake ones, because honest reviews are what build trust with new customers.
How do I know if my opening promotion worked?
Count visitors, calls and WhatsApp messages in the week, and ask each new customer how they found you. Our guide on measuring shop advertising results shows a simple way to do this without any tools.
