Restaurant and Cloud Kitchen Video Ads in India: How to Get More Direct Orders Through WhatsApp and Reels
By Motu Patlu Ads · Published · 6 min read
People decide what to eat with their eyes and often in a few seconds. A short video of food being plated can do the work of a long menu. For a restaurant or cloud kitchen, it can also move customers from a delivery app to your own number.
This guide is about food: what to film, how to time it, what to say and how to take orders on WhatsApp without losing track.
What makes a food video make people hungry?
Show one dish, not the whole menu. The first three seconds decide whether someone keeps watching.
- Movement: sauce being poured, steam rising, a biryani handi opened, a cheese pull, tadka sizzling, dosa being flipped.
- Close-ups: hold the phone 20 to 30 cm from the food and tap to focus.
- Natural light: shoot near a window. Avoid shadows from your own hand or phone.
- Sound: keep the real sizzle or crunch audio, it makes people want to order.
- Clean plate and background: wipe the rim, remove clutter and use a steel or white plate that suits the food.
Tip: Film the dish within a minute of plating. Food loses colour quickly, and a fresh, honest shot is better than heavy filters.
How is a cloud kitchen video different from a restaurant video?
A restaurant can show seating, ambience and staff. A cloud kitchen has no dining room, so trust has to come from the kitchen, the packing and the brand name. Show a clean counter, gloves or head cover where relevant, sealed packaging and the label with your kitchen name.
Repeat your kitchen name and signature dish in every video so people remember it when they search. Keep your FSSAI licence or registration in order and display it where it is required.
Why push direct orders if customers already use delivery apps?
Aggregators like Swiggy and Zomato are useful for discovery. But direct orders on your own WhatsApp or phone number let you know the customer, send them offers and build repeat business. The simple goal is to make the second order a direct one. Print your number on every bag and leaflet and add a small thank-you note: "Next time WhatsApp karein aur free dessert paayein." Work out your own costs before you promise anything, and only offer what you can sustain.
When should I post during the day and week?
- Before lunch (around 11 am): office tiffins, thalis and combos.
- Before dinner (around 6 pm): family combos, biryani, pizzas, rolls and desserts.
- Late evening: snacks, shakes and midnight cravings if you deliver late.
- Weekends: family platters, party packs, special desserts.
- Festival times: satvik or fasting menus in Navratri, iftar combos in Ramzan, party trays in Diwali, and gifting boxes at celebrations. Plan early. See Navratri ideas and Eid and Ramzan ideas.
- Weather: hot soup and pakoras in monsoon, cold drinks and ice cream in summer.
What does a 20-second restaurant video script look like?
This sample is for a Friday dinner combo. Change the dish, name and offer to match yours.
- 0-3 seconds, close-up of a sizzling plate or a biryani handi being opened: text "Friday dinner sorted." Real sound of sizzle.
- 3-8 seconds, the combo laid out together: biryani, raita, gulab jamun: text "Family combo for 4, Rs 899 (example)." Voice: "Garam garam biryani, taaza raita aur meetha."
- 8-13 seconds, a staff member sealing the packaging or a customer enjoying in the restaurant with permission: text "Fresh made. Sealed packing."
- 13-17 seconds, UPI QR or WhatsApp icon with the number: text "WhatsApp karein: 98XXXXXXXX." Voice: "Seedha order karein, free gulab jamun."
- 17-20 seconds, logo and area: text "Spice Box Kitchen. Delivery in Andheri West (example)."
How do I take direct orders on WhatsApp without mistakes?
Create a clear menu with photos and prices as a WhatsApp Business catalogue. Use quick replies for greetings, delivery areas, payment details and closing time. Ask each customer for: name, items, address with landmark, and payment method. Repeat the order back before confirming and give an approximate time.
Sample reply: "Namaste! Spice Box Kitchen mein aapka swagat hai. Menu yahan hai: [link]. Kripya items, address aur payment (UPI/cash) bata dijiye. Hum 5 minute mein confirm karenge."
If orders grow, label chats as new, preparing, out for delivery and done. Our WhatsApp Business app guide explains how.
How can Reels and Stories bring new customers?
Reels can reach people who have never heard of you, especially in your city. Use behind-the-kitchen clips: dough being tossed, spices being ground, a chef plating. Add your area in the text and tag your location. Stories work for daily specials. Our Instagram Reels ideas for local shops lists formats that suit food. Also keep photos and timings updated on Google Maps, using our Google Business Profile guide.
What should I write in captions and on-screen text?
- Dish name in simple words, like "Butter Chicken Combo".
- Veg or non-veg clearly marked, plus any allergens you know about.
- Price or "combo from Rs 249 (example)".
- Delivery area and timing.
- One clear action: "WhatsApp now" or "Order before 9 pm".
Tip: Avoid claims like "best in the city" or "100% healthy". Describe the dish and let customers decide.
What hygiene and honesty basics should I show?
Customers notice cleanliness. Show clean hands, covered hair, fresh ingredients and sealed bags. Do not show food that has been reheated as "just made". Make sure photos match what is actually delivered, including portion size. Honest ads bring repeat orders, and misleading ones may attract complaints. For general rules, see shop advertising mistakes and rules.
Can I make food ads without shooting every time?
Yes. With Motu Patlu Ads, you can upload a photo of your restaurant or kitchen, add your offer and contact, and choose a style such as Shop Promo or daily deal to generate a vertical video. Check the script and prices before sharing. More ideas are on our restaurant page.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a restaurant video ad be?
Between 10 and 20 seconds works well for most food videos. Open with the dish in the first three seconds, give one offer, and end with the order number. Longer behind-the-scenes clips can be 30 to 45 seconds.
Should a cloud kitchen show the kitchen?
Yes, in a tidy and honest way. Since customers cannot visit, showing a clean prep area, safe packing and your brand label helps build trust. Do not show anything you would not want a customer to inspect.
Can I run offers only on direct WhatsApp orders?
Yes, many kitchens do this to encourage repeat customers. Make sure the offer is clear, such as a free dessert or small discount, and that your own cost works out, since you may not earn the same margin as in other channels.
Do I need a professional camera for food videos?
No. A phone with a clean lens, good daylight, a steady hand and a tidy plate is enough to begin. Many small kitchens get started with a phone and a small tripod.
What is the best time to share a dinner offer?
Share it when people are deciding, usually one to two hours before they usually eat. Test a few slots for a week and track which one brings more calls and messages.
